A very useful item, calottes are used to cover over knots in thread or cord, with a hinged clam shell type of aqrrangement. This  makes a neat finish to necklaces, and provides a way of attaching clasps to threaded necklaces, via the ring at the end. For more details, see the related techniques article, Using Calottes.
